| Mecklenburg County Virginia, like Charlotte County, was named for Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort of George III.
Mecklenburg was formed in 1764-65, from the part of Lunenburg that was Saint James Parish. Saint James Parish was formed in 1761 when
Cumberland Parish was divided. The area of Mecklenburg is 665 square miles. Boydton is the county seat.
The county was formed from part of Lunenburg County in 1764 and was legally established in 1765. There are five incorporated towns
within the county: Boydton (county seat), Chase City, Clarksville, La Crosse, and South Hill.
The county has a rich tradition of agriculture, primarily in tobacco. The town of Clarksville is known as the oldest continuous
flue-cured tobacco market in the world.
Mecklenburg County enjoys the charm of the traditional Southern small community combined with the progressive stride of modern life.
Its people live in a close community atmosphere that opens its arms to strangers with ease. People are our greatest asset. The area's
educational, recreational and spiritual vitality makes life in the county a pleasure for all.
Mecklenburg County's Prestwould Plantation is a page out of history.
The home was built in 1790 and remained as the family home of the Skipwiths for one hundred twenty-four years and four generations.
It is now owned by the Prestwould Foundation and is the home of the Roanoke River Museum. The plantation is open to visitors daily from
May to September and weekends in October. A nominal admission fee is charged.
The lovely flowers gracing the MacCallum More Gardens draw visitors through their beauty and endless variety. The garden house, the
home of the late Virginia Chief Justice E. W. Hudgins, and the fascinating Moon Gate at the garden's entrance, enthrall the young and
old alike.
For railroad enthusiasts, the South Hill Model Railroad Museum is home to a scale replica of the Atlantic-Danville Railroad,
depicting its route from Emporia to Clarksville, Virginia. Doll fanciers can enjoy the Virginia S. Evans Doll Museum which features an
extensive collection of antique dolls, and is also located in the old train station in South Hill.
And the many lakes, museums, state parks and camping sites draw visitors to Mecklenburg time and time again.
